Vienna ends the year with its ears. A symphony on the eve of the eve, a whole opera house laughing at one actor, a bell that silences a square of thousands, and then, everywhere at once, the same waltz. No fireworks needed. We would spend the last two days of the year and the first one listening to the city, its way.
30 December, 7pm: the Ninth, ten minutes from where it began
Half past six behind the Opera, the windows of the Hotel Sacher lit red and gold. Until 1870, a theatre stood on this ground, the Kärntnertortheater, and on 7 May 1824 it gave the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth.
Two hundred years later, the symphony plays a short walk away, in the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus. The Vienna Symphony and the Wiener Singakademie perform it on 30 and 31 December, and again on 1 January, at 7pm. Sixty-five minutes, and in the last of them, the Ode to Joy rising from the choir like a door flung open.
31 December, 10am: Demel, and a chimney sweep for luck
Kohlmarkt, ten o'clock. The doors of Demel open under four letters that should not be there: k.u.k., the old imperial warrant. When the monarchy fell in 1918, Anna Demel kept them on the sign, at the risk of a fine. They have never come down.
Inside, the Rococo rooms smell of butter and chocolate. At the back, behind a glass wall, the pastry cooks pull, fill and glaze. In the shop, candied violets, the ones Empress Elisabeth is said to have ordered. Demel takes no reservations, so the morning belongs to whoever comes first.
Outside, the stalls have filled with Glücksbringer, the lucky charms the Viennese give each other today: little pigs, horseshoes, ladybirds, pots of four-leaf clover, and chimney sweeps, who once went door to door at New Year with their wishes. Tonight, in kitchens across the city, families will drop melted wax into cold water and read the year in the shape it makes.
6pm: the jailer at the State Opera
Third act of Die Fledermaus, the prison. The singers have left the stage, and Frosch, the drunken jailer, has it to himself. A full house leans forward to hear what he will say about its year.
Frosch speaks rather than sings, and the actor writes his own lines. Last year, Michael Niavarani sorted Viennese insults into a system, then climbed down into the orchestra pit to look for his keys. He plays Frosch again this year. The State Opera has given Johann Strauss's operetta on New Year's Eve almost every year since 1900, in Otto Schenk's production. Every seat has subtitles, in English among other languages.
Midnight: the Pummerin
Kärntner Straße at a quarter to midnight. Coats buttoned to the chin, glasses of Sekt in hand, everyone walking the same way, up to Stephansplatz and the north tower.
In living rooms across Austria, the television has just shown Dinner for One, an English sketch from 1963, as it does every year in the hour before midnight. Then the screens hand over to the cathedral.
The Pummerin weighs twenty tonnes. The bell before it was cast in 1711 from Ottoman cannons, and fell when the cathedral burned in April 1945. Its pieces went into the new one. It rings only for the great feasts, and for this. For a few seconds, the square goes quiet, the bronze filling the cold air. When it stops, the Blue Danube starts: in the square, in ballrooms, in kitchens, and on the pavement, where couples turn in their coats.
1 January: the Radetzky March, and nowhere to be
Late morning. In the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, the flowers from the Vienna City Gardens fill the stage, and the Vienna Philharmonic walks on for its New Year's Concert. At the end, as every year since 1946, the Radetzky March, and the whole hall claps along.
Tickets are drawn by lot, and the 2027 draw closed in February 2026. We would not promise the hall itself.
The first afternoon of the year
A symphony on the 30th. On the 31st, violets at Demel, a waltz lesson in the street, the jailer, the late table, the bell. And on the 1st, the Radetzky March clapped in a golden hall, a long lunch, and then the first afternoon of the year, the Ring quiet, and nowhere at all to be.
